The Comic Book Movie Top Ten

With all the movie announcements coming out of C2E2 it seems like now would be a great time to reflect on the comic book movies we have loved to date. Without further ado we present the First Appearance Top Ten Comic Book Films.

10. Batman Begins

Christopher Nolan’s 2005 film resurrected the Batman movie franchise with his spin on Batman’s origin. A great film that kicked off a fantastic trilogy. It serves a shining example of an origin film.

9. Thor

Marvels god of thunder followed on the heels of the Iron Man and Iron Man 2 as films from the Marvel film studios. While many felt Odin’s Son spent too much time on earth we really enjoyed the film. It proved that Marvel’s studio was on to something big and it would lay the ground work for Marvels Avengers.

8. X-Men

2000 saw Fox bring Marvels mutants to the big screen. The film arguably kicked off the Comic Book Movie rebirth. Featuring a fantastic cast led by acting legends Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart as Magneto and Charles Xavier the film grossed 300,000,000 worldwide a huge win for the comic film movement.

7. Thor: The Dark World

Marvels sequel to our number 9 . Set after the events of Marvels Avengers the film spent much more time on Asgard then the original, and saw the show stolen by Tom Hiddelston steal the show as Loki. A great take on Thor and an all-around fun movie.

6. X-Men First Class

The “Reboot” of the X-Men franchise saw Micheal Fassbender and James McAvoy take over the roles of Magneto and Charles Xavier. A Pre-Hunger Games Jennifer Lawrence plays the role of Mystique. The story set in 1962 follows the characters in their formidable years. Though making a few tweaks to some characters the film is a strong X-Men film and one of our favorites.

5. Captain America: The First Avenger

Marvels Captain America origin story is set in WWII following the frail Steve Rogers on his journey to becoming Captain America. The film controversial cast Chris Evans as Cap despite his appearing as another Marvel character when he played Johnny Storm in Fox’s 2005 Fantastic Four film. Hindsight would prove Marvel right as Evans nails the role making it hard to imagine anyone else playing Cap.The film is a great period piece and compelling underdog story. It brought one of Marvels tent pole characters to the big screen in a big way.

4. Iron Man

Much like Chris Evans casting as Captain America, Marvel saw a mild uproar at the announcement of Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as Tony Stark in Marvel Studios first film Iron Man. Much like Chris Evans Robert Downey Jr. absolutely becomes Tony Stark and I personally can’t imagine anyone else in the role. (though that seems inevitable) Iron Man can be looked upon as the film that started it all for Marvel. Another great origin story on the big screen.

3. Marvel’s Avengers

The movie ever comic book fan dreamed of for years finally came to be. Under the guidance of Joss Whedon the main attractions of Marvels previous films Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and The Hulk join forces with Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury to save humanity from Loki and his alien army. The movie was a huge success that did not disappoint most fans. The sequel has begun filming.

2. The Dark Knight

What can you say about this one? Heath Ledger. Many people scratched their collective heads when Heath Ledger was cast as Batman’s foil The Joker. Heath Ledger went on to blow everyone out of the water by truly transforming him self into the clown prince of crime. Ledger would go on to win an Oscar for best supporting actor for the role. The Dark Knight stands as not just a great comic book movie, but a great movie in general.

1.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Caps second solo film is arguably the best Marvel Studios film to date. A throw back to 70’s political thrillers The Winter Soldier is a fantastic film that really sees Scarlett Johansson come into her own as Black Widow. Combine that with an awesome representation of The Falcon as portrayed by Anthony Mackie and a great performance again by Chris Evans as the Captain and you have our Number one Comic Book movie.
