Best Actor Winner for THE JOKER: Joaquin Phoenix!

Last night Joaquin Phoenix took home the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role. His portrayal of the Joker was one of a lifetime.  It was no surprise that he won said award since he had been cleaning up at all the other award shows. His thank you speech was touching and brought truth to light…

“I’ve been a scoundrel all my life. I’ve been selfish. I’ve been cruel at times, hard to work with, and I’m grateful that so many of you in this room have given me a second chance,” he told the audience. “And I think that’s when we’re at our best, when we support each other. Not when we cancel each other out for past mistakes, but when we help each other grow, when we educate each other, when we guide each other towards redemption. That is the best of humanity.”

His mention of his brother River Phoenix made the moment so much more real…

“When he was when he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric,” he went on. “He said, ‘Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow.’”

Let it be remembered that Joaquin is the second actor to win an Oscar for the Joker. Heath Ledger won, after his death in 2008. Let us hope the DC Universe finds a way to include Phoenix’s performance in another film.

The Joker was created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson.
