What to say? What to say? I won’t lie dear readers. I’m not a huge fan of the Harley Quinn character. I haven’t figured out the total appeal. I get that the character exposes unlimited excitement within all of us. It unfortunately takes a little bit of crazy to draw out a violent wild ride. All of this is hopefully imaginary in a civilized society…whatever…I know. Birds of Prey opens February 7th. Margot Robbie is Oscar Nominated for her roll in Bombshell. I would imagine that ballots have been and cast for the Oscars. Let’s hope Harley Quinn gets her going. With that let’s get our list going…
10. NO JOKER
Wait. wait. wait…How is this a good thing? There is no Joker in the Harley Quinn movie? Lost and confused we are by this turn of events. To be fair the Joker is a charismatic chap that tends to overshadow pretty much everything going on in any movie…thanks Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger(no really thanks…no jokes). We just got a Joker movie back in October. Why would you want more? Joaquin Phoenix is going to get the Oscar for the role sooo…let it be. This is The Birds of Prey and has it’s place…and that time is now.
Since all the DC films are tied together, it stands to reason that Batman could be here in the mix somewhere. Possibly. The setting is still in Gotham. It’s unavoidable that THE BAT could be mentioned. Warner Brothers has been working on a new Batman film for release next year. The Joker, not showing up, almost overshadows Batman not appearing in the film. It remains to be seen or unseen if you will, but either way it helps the hype that we could get a Dark Knight sighting.
8. “R” RATING
The Harley Quinn character originally appeared in the Batman Animated series in the 90’s. That show was toned down to play to a sightly younger audience. Over time though the character has broken out in a violent and more sexual nature. I would like to say that is just what the character needed to break out an become huge. REALLLYY…not so much. The violence simply adds to the realism It,s a need to the subject matter. While probably in production the same time, The Joker proved an “R” rated feature could play to audiences…and speaking of ratings…
7. Good Reviews
The initial reviews for Birds of Prey have been favorable. The film started out sitting at a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. So what does that really mean? It means people will see this a make the decision to see the movie. Other films have open to favorable reviews and the fans have turned on it; IE: Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If the film is true to the character’s nature and possibly comes up some redeeming quality for Ms Quinn, it should do well. I don’t see the creators killing off the character in some self sacrificing heroic deed. Let’s just hope the movie is fun and not too heavy.
6. Victor Zsasz(Chris Messina)
Villains here and villains there…Zsasz is a special kind of crazy. The character first appeared in 1992. He makes cuts in his skin to represent the people he has murdered. The character was extremely prominent in the Gotham television series. He came off as more of a hit man gun for hire sort of thing. Anthony Carrigan played him perfectly. It’s exciting to see how Chris Messina will pull off the character. It’ll also be interesting to see how he fits in the Birds of Prey dynamic. Truth be told you can’t have bad guys unless you have the good girls…
5. Renee Montoya(Rosie Perez)
I know. Your going who?? Montoya was also one of the creations of Bruce Timm and Paul Dini from the Batman Animated Series Days. The character was a detective and partner to Harvey Bullock. She was also one of the first lesbian characters to be featured in comics. The character’s introduction to the comics did not come off in spectacular fasion. When she was exposed as being lesbian, Montoya quit the force due to the corruption within the police force. Rosie Perez is a perfect choice for the character. Her sheer attitude should play well with the character’s edgy nature. It should be a great balance to Harley Quinn. It brings a conscious to the Birds of Prey.
4. Dinah Lance/Black Canary(Jurnee Smollett-Bell)
The Black Canary, historically, has been a white blonde woman. Ok…the blonde hair was a wig. This is more so in the comics. The character’s history and appearance has been all over the place with the Arrow TV series. I’m excited to see the character portrayed on the big screen. If you didn’t know, the character is powered with a loud sonic scream that could make anyone deaf. She is also a skilled martial artist. A force to be challenged to be sure. My exposure to Jurnee Smollett-Bell is limited and well non-existent. This isn’t a bad thing, but I’m sure her skills were evident with the producers. I’m going to hope the casting director has picked the correct actor for this role. Regardless it’ll be fun to see the Black Canary on the screen for the first time.
3. Helena Bertinelli/Huntress(Mary Elizabeth Winstead)
First off, The Huntress is the daughter of Batman and Catwoman. Of course this gets us all excited for the character…sadly, the whole Bat/Cat daughter thing is something in another DC Multiverse. I don’t imagine it being a thing here at all. So why…not?!? Come on! What’s the big deal? Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a big deal. She has the comic cred with Scott Pilgram vs. the World. Mary recently appeared in Gemini along side Will Smith(Deadshot). She has an excellent look that should work well with the Huntress. She also gets to use a sweet crossbow in the film. It’s sad that we don’t get to see the character in full DC comics style.
2. Roman Sionis/Black Mask(Ewan McGregor)
Imagine a version of Batman, but not good. Roman Sionis was wealthy son of a cosmetics giant. He was dropped on his head a birth…hence the eternal bad mood. As Black Mask, he became a brutal and ruthless gangster with a taste for torture. It’s this dark and demented character that Ewan McGregor gets to bring to the screen. We get to see Ewan cut loose and really dig his teeth into this fun roll. This flick should get Obi-Wan back on the map for the Star Wars tv show of the same name. I generally enjoy McGregor in most of his roles. Christopher Robin, Doctor Sleep and Fargo are some good reasons to look forward to the actor’s appearance in this high profile pic.
1.Harley Quinn(Margot Robbie)
I will say it one last time…this film does not exist without Margot Robbie. Her performance in Suicide Squad was over the top and worth every moment of screen time. DC/Warner Brothers saw the potential and jumped after it with this BIRDS OF PREY. The film is about her emancipation/freedom. Harley Quinn on the loose can be a good thing or bad. The film is called Birds of Prey. The creators clearly understand that Harley Quinn needs a supporting cast to live up to the hype. Margot Robbie is simply the “IT” girl right now and I don’t thing she really has anything to prove. That being said…the pressure is one and this should be a wild ride for all involved.
