Review: ★★★★☆

IDW Publishing drops The Spider King, which at first glance looks to be a simple Viking story. There have been several Viking stories tossed around in popular media. The Vikings TV show, How to Train a Dragon, and the not so viking like Brave. This particular book has borrowed from each of these stories. Seven pages in and I’ve seen it all. It was a memorable violent battle like scene that made me realize there’s more to this story. D’Armini’s artwork is highly stylized. His use of darks and bizarre figure drawings stand out in the kinetic action pieces. The Vikings all have red noses to imply the cold and the nature of the characters. But then here’s the catch; the book takes a switch that I didn’t see coming. The book takes a hard-core turn to gore and high fantasy. Let’s just say the book takes another turn toward pop culture, not one I saw coming but now I want to read this book more so then ever. The Spider King is crazy comic book that if you stick with it, you’l be pleasantly surprised.
