Review: ★★★★★

TMNT Universe’s current story arc has felt much more like a dark Frank Miller story meets Kill Bill than the stories we see from the main series.  It’s the beauty of having a secondary series for the Turtles where we can see side characters taking approaches that the Turtles themselves might not go.  Karai’s journey in Japan has led her to the ancient sword she desired, a new warrior along the way, and now she has her sights set on the Japanese criminal underworld.  If you are going to try and take control over the baddest of the bad, there’s a certain promise of violence and this issue delivers in spades with Sophie Campbell’s intense pencil work.  Burnham and Campbell’s work on Karai have gone a long way to develop her character.  Before she seemed more like a sadistic brat under her grandfathers watch.  She still is a bit sadistic, but now as she works to take control on her own, she’s really grown into the role.  This issue wraps up her journey for the moment, but we can’t wait to see her bring her new empire back to New York in the future.
