Review:  ★★★★

Valiant is getting ready to launch the 3rd Ninjak series, meaning the 3rd #1, of the current universe.  Starting things off a little differently, they have brought us a #0 issue to really delve into the question of who is Ninjak?  For newcomers to the character, this provides a great jumping on point that recaps who he is and what the last series was about.  For those readers and long time fans, it also gives a chance to show Ninjak doing what he does best, which happens to be killing scores of the badguys.    If that weren’t enough, the ending does start us on the road of the plot for the new series as a small teaser.  Many #0 issues will just try to tell some untold story from the characters path, but sticking with a recap here was a wonderful choice so when the series does start, it won’t have to be bogged down with retelling past events.  While the story kept a brisk pace so as to cover as much as they could in one issue, the art could have used a little more detail than just showing Ninjak hacking people to pieces.  Portella keeps up and makes some great big panels, but the action scenes do start looking a little bland with so much splashes of red blood.  Even so, the story keeps everything on track for a great look into what makes Ninjak the badass ninja we love.
