Flip Wars is basically Othello mixed in with robots and power-ups. That’s not a bad thing at all and certainly brings a uniqueness to the table that makes it unlike anything else on the eShop. On the flip side of things, just being unique doesn’t necessarily make a good game. Does Flip Wars have enough going for it to make it worth your time?
In Flip Wars you will control a tiny robot, facing off against up to three other players or AI controlled in a colored battle grid. Stomping down on the panels that make up the grid will flip them to your color, up, down, left, right, and center of you. While you go back and forth competing for territory against your opponents, you’ll come across power-ups that change your flip range, make you faster, among other abilities. There are a few more modes added in that mix it up slightly, such as being the last man standing and knocking everyone off.
It features local and online multiplayer and can be lots of fun with the right group with several different arenas to choose from. If multiplayer is your focus, Flip Wars is a great game. If your more the solo type, you’re going to want to pass on this one. You can jump in to a match with the AI and choose your arena for a quick match, but that’s about all there is to it. There is no story or single player challenges to focus on, leaving it with a fun basis but shallow depth.
There is actually a great game behind it all. It’s disappointing that more couldn’t have been thrown in to keep it fresh with things like challenges or some interesting unlockables. It is a cheaper title so it’s not a bad idea to pick it up the next time you and your friends are hanging out or taking a break from Splatoon, just don’t expect much out of it otherwise.
