Ready At Dawn is a company that is known for one of the best visual games to release on the Playstation, The Order 1866, so seeing them jump to a multiplayer brawler is a huge change of pace.  You might wonder how something so out of their normal comfort zone might turn out.  More than anything, it turned out pretty damn fun.

Deformers is the type of game that you can sit on the couch with friends and play or jump online and play with people around the world. Deformers boasts the tag line “Because they’re squishy” and they don’t lie. Deformers is a Super Smash Bros/Rocket League hybrid, feature squishy mold-able animales/creatures. Each creature has their own unique look, that can be customized further with accessories, emotes, and sound effects.

There are multiple modes to choose from including, Death Match, Team Death Match, and Form Ball which is a Rocket League style mode. You use the formers to knock around a soccer ball until you get it in the goal. All players involved can attack and defend the ball while trying to score and stop the opposing team from scoring. What makes Deformers unique is instead of just running into other players, you’ll stick them, super push them, and blow them up to score points that lead to a leveling system. The level system sees you leveling your profile, to unlock new items for the Formers to wear, as well as new emotes, tags, and even sound effects. You’ll also earn coins that will allow you to purchase said items, once they are unlocked.

Deformers uses a basic control scheme, with the analog sticks controlling movement and camera, the X/A button to jump, the left Shoulder Buttons to block/grab, and the right shoulder buttons to attack. The controls feel very fluid, and while there isn’t a tutorial system, I found myself picking up the controls within the first few rounds of Form Ball.

Deformers is fun for all ages and can be enjoyed both online and via couch co-op. There’s nothing more satisfying than bouncing onto an enemy, then force pushing them off a cliff. Deformers is definitely bringing back classic couch co-op fun as well as introducing the world to some incredibly squishy characters. Deformers is a game that should not be missed if you are looking for a game to give you an enjoyable experience, with great laughs and epic moments. Also, they’re squishy!
