Comics for the most part create an experience for the reader that invites them into a new world or a personal journey that they can relate to on higher level. The second issue of God Country drops us into the middle of dad, mom, grandpa, and grand-daughter coming to terms that grandpa had just beat a space alien with a giant sword. Of course it was giant talking sword. How else would you defeat an alien riding a tornado? The sword is the sword of swords, Excalibur if you will, and the foundation of every other sword of legends. The sword has a past and a giant Greek like god comes to claim the sword from Grandpa Emmett. This is where the conflict of the story begins. We also get the human aspect of Emmett’s disease and how the sword cures him and hurts him at the same time. God Country is set in Texas, so I believe that’s partly where we get our title. The art by Geoff Shaw works really well. He has great facial expressions for his characters. He uses scale to change the setting when Emmett is talking to Aristus. Issue #2 of God Country is more of a set up for an up coming battle for control of sword and gets us more excited for whats to come.
