Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: The Ghost Review

  • Episode: The Ghost (S04E01)
  • Review:  ★★★★☆

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D returned last week and they came back with a bang. During the break Coulson and Mac have been hunting Skye/Daisy/Quake (take your pick for her name).  Skye is on a crusade to destroy the Watchdogs and save the Inhumans. The show doesn’t start slow and by the title we already were in for some fun.

Ghost Rider makes his debut and clearly had no idea what going on.  I’m used to the original Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider so this new one was a little off-putting. He did some questionable acts. The Spirit of Vengeance is correct and the visuals are really cool.  Plus Ghost Rider has a sweet Charger this time. We get a nice introduction to the sense of morality that swings both ways with the Rider.

The writers have done their best to mix things up. Every team member has their own task on the show which should build to some great character development. Granted, I miss the team being the team. The story has a new weird hierarchy which strangely has Simmons more in-charge then May or even Coulson. Everything is also classified. It seems like a running in joke on the show. It crawls very much back into the spy-ish type story. They do bring up the Sacovia Accords as a nice tie-in, which caused all the issues during Captain America Civil War.

This first episode back was actually very well done and a lot fun to drop back into the world . There are some little hidden things in the show that might develop into the big bad of the season. Ghost Rider could be a focus of the story and should build into the Doctor Strange movies mystic aspects. The concept of magic hasn’t really been introduced into the Marvel Universe beyond Thor, but I think this is the rumblings of the beginning.
