Gotham: Scarification Review

  • Episode: Scarification (S02E05)
  • Review:  ★★★★☆

After four episodes you would think that Gotham would slow down or the season would find itself in a down turn at some point. NOPE.  NADA.  NONE!

First off we get the Penguin making some hard choices about his role in Galavan’s plan and scars happen.  It’s nice to see the Penguin on the heels of his feet. It makes him a much better character. The king of Gotham has a nice ring to it, but loss of control makes him more dangerous. The whole story involves the back story of Galavan and his long ties with the Waynes. It’s a graphic story that Oswald takes to heart and uses to his advantage.

GCPD ups their game quite a bit during the episode. They create all kinds of problems for the Penguin. They also have to deal with some nasty fire bugs that have a bit of left over loyalty to Fish Mooney. The fire bug family has their own back story that Selena has a little info on. During one of GCPD raids one of the fire bug brothers has an incident. I must admit it was gruesome, but it gave me a chuckle to see they actually pulled off such an event. It was explosive.

Galavan’s plan deepens even further as he tries to get Gordon to endorse him. This is a smart play to involve Gordon. Lee points out to Jim that he himself is a power player in Gotham. People look up to Jim for direction even though Gordon has his own skeletons.

I can see where all these situations might eventually tie together during RISE OF THE VILLAINS.  Gotham had a somewhat shaky start in the first season while things have finally started to pay off.  This season the show has decided to stick with its current style and it go with it.  It’s all the better for it.
