- Episode: A Wanted (Inhu)Man (S03E03)
- Review: ★★★☆☆
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.can be really good at times and really just plain boring at others. This episode is a mix of both.
With Simmons return from wherever she was sent by the monolith, the episode tends to mirror Fitz’s issues from last season. It seems tedious and boring. I guess it’s a way to make the characters more interesting, but it felt like retread. First season we saw how cleaver they can be and useful to the team. S.H.I.E.L.D. should still be a huge organization even if it’s a broken one. It has tons of characters to play with, so move along.
The true focus of the episode is recovering Lincoln. Hunting or saving the Inhumans seems to be where the plot is going this season. The chase is fun and we get a little more insight into Lincoln’s powers. The part that makes this really interesting is the deal that Coulson has to make so he’s not at war with another agency. It’s these choices that make Coulson a character that we truly enjoy. It also brings to light some of his true power within the Marvel Universe.
Lastly, S.H.I.E.L.D., at its core, is a spy show. Somebody should do some spy-ish stuff. Hunter is on his own mission to become part of Hydra to get revenge on Ward. He has to go through a lot to make this happen. It’s nice to see that he gets May to help out. I like the whole S.H.I.E.L.D. vs Hydra. It’s good vs evil, right or wrong. It’s a good thing to take the fight to the bad guys as they’re trying to do now.
Simmons recovery could have been skipped, but Lincoln and Hunter’s parts both stood out. Unfortunately that’s just par for the course with a show of this size; we have to take the boring with the interesting at times.
