Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Laws of Nature Review

  • Episode:  Laws of Nature  (S03E01)
  • Review:  ★★★★☆

Last night we saw the return of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or X-Factor.  The world that our team lives in now is where mutants, sorry, Inhumans I mean, live among us. The Inhumans are humans with alien DNA inside them. The release of the terrigen mist has caused this reaction in our fellow planetary inhabitants through contaminated fish oil we saw at the end of the second season.  S.H.I.E.L.D. is now trying to collect the Inhumans for our protection and theirs.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is all tied together, but sadly it doesn’t includes mutants. Of course this is because FOX owns the film rights to the X-Men. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a bridge from one movie to another. It’s an ad that gets us by  from Avengers Age of Ultron and Ant Man until the next.  It will all lead up to Captain America: Civil War. It also pushes its own story, but with a goal of selling more Marvel stuff.

Downsides accepted here, Marvel’s Agents of Shield is a really good show. It evolves enough to keep us interested. We buy into the fact that Daisy is now fully helping S.H.I.E.L.D. with her powers, even though we miss her clever tech, cyber hacker side. Coulson has a new opposite that seems to know his every move, even though they might be on the same side.  Fitz is obsessed with getting Simmons back, which makes him focus on his goal. Bobbi and Hunter are redeveloping their relationship. Mac is in everybody’s business, but in a good way. Plus we get to see a new bad guy with massive strength and a goal is not good for the emerging Inhumans.

It had a few weak points, such as Coulson and Hunter getting in over their head quickly, as happened a few times last season.  While it was fun watching them get out of their prediacament, should they be still getting into that position?  We didn’t get any word on May or Ward, so hopefully they will be back very soon.  The tease for Simmons has us very interested, so we definitely can’t wait for next week to see where that leads.
