- Episode: Damned If You Do (S02E01)
- Review: ★★★☆☆
Gotham has finally returned. We are grateful for the opportunity to be dropped into the Batman realm once again. Or are we?
Like many shows coming into a new season, time has passed and our characters have moved on from their summer break. Jim Gordon has been busted down to traffic cop following the events of the season finale. Bullock has retired and is now working at a bar. The Penguin is now the head boss of Gotham. All this is brought to light after Gordon has an encounter with Zaardon.
Zaardon’s appearance is mostly a vehicle to introduce the new season big bad for the show. The new main villain has some weird plot for the inhabitants of Arkham. Speaking of Arkham we get to see Barbara’s entrance into the loony bin of Gotham. Through the duration of the “Arkham” scenes Barbara uses her sexuality to get what she wants. The whole thing is really strange cause it feels more camp Batman then the grittiness of Gotham. I am hoping the show doesn’t walk down that path.
James Gordon has to go through a rite of passage. He has to yet again make a deal with the Penguin after quickly getting kicked off the force. It’s not something he wants to do but it is something he is damned to do. The trick of it all is that Bruce Wayne will convince him to take the dark path for the bigger picture. The events prove results, but the cost to Gordon will stick with him for the rest of the season. It does put Commissioner Loeb in his place. We also get to see Zsasz appear in a most grim situation. I do point out that the scene is not for the faint of heart.
The season is titled Rise of the Villains. The truth be told, Gotham will get darker and more crime riddled regardless of what Jim Gordon does to stop it. It’s the stories of the Penguin, the Catwoman, the Riddler, and the Joker that will make this season interesting and fun to watch. There have been reports that the Court of Owls might show as well. Bruce is still fighting with the secrets his father kept. Into the darkness we go the thing we know is a bat will be there to protect us. Probably. Eventually.
