Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.: One of Us Review

  • Episode:  One of Us  (S01E013)
  • Review:  ★★★☆☆

This week continues to deal with Skye’s potential power issues. It becomes personal when Skye’s father Cal decides to recruit other super beings.  The trick here is that the “villains” were incarcerated or “subdued” in some manner by S.H.I.E.L.D. for the protection of the public. An “Index” was created as a list of those with special powers, which Cal uses as his recruiting list.  The first person we are introduce happens to be KF Gideon, played by Drea de Matteo from Sopranos and Sons of Anarchy. She has blades grafted to the ends of her fingers. There are three more enemies introduced: Francis (excessive strength), Wendell (hacking abilities) and Angar (Angar the Screamer from the comics). Angar is an old school Marvel villain, but he’s always been a low-level one either way.

It’s nice to see Kyle MacLachlan continue to have a large role as Cal. He totally plays the roll over the top, and he’s definitely not a criminal mastermind.  His plans are not really that well thought out, and the team he compiles is mostly a team of losers.  Cal’s whole purpose during the show is to play out some revenge upon Coulson who killed Whitehall, who Cal had been planning to kill for such a long time.  It’s fun having him as such a wildcard.

Skye continues to be the focus point for most of the story, though. They even brought in guest star Blair Underwood as a shrink to help Skye adjust to her ongoing changes. Dr. Gardner (Blair) has some past with May. They were married at some point in time. It’s was interesting to get this extra May back story, especially as Skye was fascinated by this and kept asking questions about them.

The episode gives us some more information about Bobbi and Mack. Apparently they are working for the “Real Shield”. They have a different logo and everything. I haven’t decided if this is a good thing or just another way to throw some distrust into the group. Bobbi even tells Jemma, “We’re spies. We lie for a living.”  It will be interesting to see where this goes next week as more is revealed.

Overall, I like the battle with the super villains. While they may have been cannon fodder for S.H.I.E.L.D., it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t fun watching them in action.  The resolution keeps us guessing as to what’s going in to background with this other S.H.I.E.L.D..
