2014 is set to be a huge year for comic books on the big screen. We will get new entries from Spider-Man and The X-Men and we will be getting the debut for The Guardians of the Galaxy. All of those films give fans a reason to be excited. All these films give fans a reasons to be excited, however the producers of these films may have reason to be worried because Captain America: The Winter Soldier has arrived and it sets a new bar for what comic book films can and should be.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is without a doubt the finest comic book based film I have ever seen (and I’ve seen them all). Until now that was a title held by The Dark Knight. Sure Marvels The Avengers is a fantastic film, but the thing that made The Dark Knight fantastic was that it felt like a full fledged movie and not just a comic book come to life. The Winter Soldier not only hits that mark it smashes past it. It truly is one of the finest films I’ve seen in any genre.
The second film starring Marvels star spangled man with a plan is more political thriller than comic book on screen. I won’t break down plot details as danielcelabu did a great job of that in his review. I will give a few thoughts though.
As I write this I’m struggling to decide which performance was my favorite. Chris Evans is once again fantastic as Cap. Anthony Mackie shows that the faith I had in him when it was announced he would be playing The Falcon was not misplaced as he nails the character. Samuel L. Jackson does what he always does and commands respect on the screen. But the two performances that may stand out in a stellar film are those of Robert Redford and Scarlett Johansson.
While there are and have been many fine actors in comic films Robert Redford brings the respectability of an award winning actor only matched by Sir Anthony Hopkins. Redford is near perfect in the film. The performance turned in by Scarlett Johansson is undoubtedly her best yet as Black Widow. As much as this film is about Cap it is equally hers. The performance makes me excited at the prospects of a Black Widow film. Something I would not have said before The Winter Soldier.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is far and away the best Marvel film to date. The film is a throwback to political thrillers of yesteryear. The events of The Winter Soldier will be felt throughout the Marvel Universe for sometime to come. Captain America: The Winter Soldier falls just short of perfection. If your a fan of comic books or movies you owe it to yourself to see this film. What are you waiting for? Push yourself away from your computer, put down that smart phone and get to the theater now!
