Dice Masters is a collectible dice game.  Beyond just stating obvious, after a very short period you are going to amass a lot of dice.  Keeping track of your character cards is a fairly easy task, but what about your character dice for you deck?  The Marvel Dice Masters: Uncanny X-Men Collector’s Box is the answer to this question, while also having plenty of extras.

The Marvel Dice Masters: Uncanny X-Men Collector’s Box includes:

  • All 10 Basic Action Cards from Uncanny X-Men
  • 4 Color Indicator Cards
  • 12 Basic Action Dice
  • 8 Sidekick Dice
  • 4 Marvel Dice Masters: Uncanny X-Men Foil Packs
  • 2 Storage Trays
  • 1 Professor X: Recruiting Young Mutants Full Art Promo Card
  • 1 Dice Bag

If you have picked up the starter set, some of this will just be extra such as the 10 basic action cards and the 4 color indicator cards.  While the 12 basic action dice and 8 sidekick dice would potentially be extra as well, they do have the benefit of being a dark grey compared to the standard white versions.  If you and a friend decided to split the starter set, this will make it a whole lot easier to distinguish each others dice.

Now if you decided to just get this instead of the starter deck, the Collector’s Box does contain 4 foil packs boosters.  With those 4 packs you should have enough to start playing basic games even though it will not give you a ton of options.  In the biggest disappointments of the entire package, it contains 1 Professor X: Recruiting Young Mutants Full Art Promo Card.  Beyond having different art than the standard Professor X character cards in the series, it is the exact same character card as the normal Professor X:  Recruiting Young Mutants.  If that were not bad enough, in what seems like a very strange choice, it does not include a Professor X character dice.  Unless you pull a Professor X from one of the 4 foil packs, you will not be using him in your games right away.

While it is not mentioned in the official content description, it does contain a large paper player area mat with a complete Uncanny X-Men series card checklist.  While we definitely suggest picking up the official Marvel Dice Masters: Uncanny X-Men Play Mat over using this permanently, this is a better substitute to use right off compared to the small one included with the starter set in the middle of the rule book.

Everything else we have mentioned so far is really just extra for what you really will want to buy the Collector’s box for.  The first is the more minor of the two, but it does contain a felt dice bag.  The bag feels very durable, and when compared to the starter set’s paper bags that become crinkled easily.

The main draw, however, is the storage tray itself in the box.  On the left side it has two storage areas for a good chunk of your card collections.  On the right side it has three rows of storage for your dice that can keep 165 of your dice neat and organized.  The tray makes keeping your character dice together so much easier than about any other storage solution you can think of.  Before we had this it was a very big problem setting up our teams, but now it makes setup and storage a breeze.  Underneath the actual tray there is still plenty of room for extras that you want to bring along with you to game nights as well.

An ommission we found from the Collector’s Box is an actual rule book.  This is supposed to give you everything you need to start playing, but without the rule book you may find it hard to jump in.  The argument can be made that the rule book is available online, but we do prefer the convenience of having a physical copy in front of us for reference.

The Collector’s Box is described as all one player needs.  However, we would not recommend buying this instead of the starter set.  The Marvel Dice Masters:  Uncanny X-Men Starter Set gives you plenty of character cards and dice that will help you get a winning team off the ground faster than just buying this and a mass of foil packs.  The Collector’s Box though, is the perfect complement for the starter set.  You will want to own this really just for your dice collection storage needs;  everything else included is just a welcome bonus.  Without this keeping track of your dice can be such a headache, you will want to buy this very soon into your Dice Masters playing.
