- Episode: The Saint of Last Resorts Part 2 (S01E09)
- Review: ★★★★☆
After a short Christmas break John Constantine returns. When we last left our British anti-hero he was shot and left for dead. Anne Marie had shot him to save herself and an innocent child from an ancient demon. To save himself, John casts a demon into his body. Constantine has a couple of days to perform a self-exorcism. Sounds short and straight to the point? Not quite.
The thing that makes this follow-up really good is that Chas and Zed have to find John once the demon has started to take hold. Anne Marie uses her power of self projection to find John in a Mexico City jail. His demon decided to kill several gang members. Evil or street justice? What convinces Anne Marie to find John is Zed. She points out that John has Manny helping him with his crusade. Several steps are taken to save Constantine’s soul from the demon. We learn that John’s ability to get people to follow him in his fight is his true power.
Matt Ryan really sells this episode. He plays the possessed Constantine with grace, grit, and charm. I also realized the difference between Constantine and Supernatural finally. I don’t like making the comparison, but I would like Constantine to continue its run. Supernatural is kind of the Duke Brothers of the Dark Arts. Constantine has more back story to it to make it more lasting with more class.
